Indoor Lighting

sconcesSconces are remarkably over six hundred years old, and were first used with candles to provide light in the same places we need it today. The first sconce models were made of polished metal to project the light from the flame. Today’s designs are much higher tech, and are available in many combinations for any interior design needs. These lighting features are more like works of art than just a lamp, and can dress up just about any area, while filling in dark spots in a room with a soft glow.

The wall sconce should always be used in pairs at a minimum. You can always add more sets later for a longer hallway that is dimly lit. They are also great for lining a dark staircase to increase safety, but also add a stylish flair that matches the rest of your décor. Wiring is usually handled by running the lines from the attic down to the location in the wall where they will be installed. If you have never done more than change a light bulb, then do yourself a favor, and hire a licensed electrician to do this for you. They will properly run the lines from the breaker box out to the installation location.

Wall sconces can even be used outdoors on your patio to tie your interior theme together giving your home the appearance that a professional designer did a major renovation. When researching a sconce light make sure they either have both indoor and outdoor in the same design or the one model can be used in both locations. Using this type of lighting with a dimmer switch can create a very romantic mood indoors or outdoors. They also make great night-lights to prevent a family member from tripping over furniture, and items that were not properly put away.

Sconce lighting should be considered up front during a remodel process to double check the availability of the models you want, plus making sure you have the right look and feel that will work with the rest of your design. Just like most lighting fixtures the sky is the limit on pricing, but these lights can be purchased on just about any homeowners budget. Be sure and ask your sales person about the bulbs they use for heat and energy costs concerns. As with all light manufacturing, LED lights are a great alternative, and will out last any traditional incandescent bulb on the market.
