Indoor Lighting

garden spotlightsDo you know if you really need solar power in your landscape lighting design or not? You could just head out and buy any generic garden spotlights, and head back home to install them. This is sufficient if you only need to light a particular area, however, if you are trying to achieve dramatic results, and an elegant setting on your landscape, there are a few pros and cons to consider before you purchase solar garden spotlights.

Pros

#1 – No need for electrical wiring experience. Unless you are an electrical contractor, you could easily become overwhelmed once you start digging into the wiring aspect of the project. Dealing with large amounts of electricity means you must be confident in your abilities, or consider calling a contractor.

#2 – Much easier to install than electrical powered lights. Because there is no wiring to deal with, solar powered lights are much easier to install than wired lighting kits. In most cases, you simply push a stake into the ground and attach the light housing unit, then angle the solar panel towards the sun.

#3 – Lasts much longer than traditional lights. LED bulbs last on average 30 times longer than traditional incandescent bulbs. If you are looking to save money over the life of your home, purchasing solar garden spotlight kits with LED bulbs is a wise decision.

Cons

#1 – Relies on solar power for energy. During cloudy days, or in areas where the sun is blocked by trees and shrubs, your lights will be unable to receive a charge for their batteries. If the panels do not receive direct sunlight they will not provide a long enough charge to run the lights through the night.

#2 – Low light output compared to incandescent lights. Most LED and solar garden spotlights are lower wattage than traditional style wired lighting kits. Because they are run off rechargeable batteries, it would drain them too quickly to power higher voltage bulbs throughout the evening. This means that most LED spotlight kits will provide much lower amounts of light than comparable 12v lights.

Weigh these pros and cons against the effects you are trying to achieve with the landscape lighting design, and you should have a much easier time determine whether a solar garden spotlight kit is right for you. Solar power does provide quite a few benefits, but if the cons do not outweigh them for your particular situation, electrical garden spotlights may be the better choice.
